INTRODUCTION
Industry Training Works (ITW) provides fit for purpose training to ensure the safety of companies and their teams. ITW have specialist training sites in Kinleith and Kawerau, which have major fibre processing operations including Oji pulp mills, Norske Skog paper mills, CHH sawmill and plywood and Sequal lumber. These sites are also serviced by a wide range of specialist contractors that help maintain and repair the mills as well as running major shutdowns and overhauls.
BACKGROUND
ITW’s trainers and specialist equipment can also come to a clients’ workplace to customise training and include the unique risks presented by each site. Courses include Workplace Health & Safety Compliance training, First Aid, Fire and Rescue, Emergency First Response and Forestry Sectors.
ITW successfully applied to SWIFT for a funding grant to enable the organisation to develop and establish NZQA-accredited programs for Security Levels 1 and 2. As well as the required security training, students also undertake additional subjects required including First Aid, Warden, Health & Safety rep. This also improves the employability of trainees given that they can cover multiple site requirements.
The outcome highlights are that out of 36 trainees in the first cohorts, all 36 are now in employment. In addition, ITW have been able to add in two further positions as well as an additional contractor. On the last course, 6 people travelled from out of town (Kawerau, Te Kuiti, Tauranga) to Tokoroa to get the qualifications.
